Sharpening & Profile Grinding of Complex Cutting Tools

We perform sharpening, regrinding and restoration of the geometry of gear-cutting, form and special metal-cutting tools.
Our specialised Klingelnberg, Petewe, Deckel and 3E642 equipment allows us to work with both standard cutting tools and complex profiles where the exact geometry of the cutting edge must be restored.

FROM GEAR HOBS TO COMPLEX FORM PROFILES

We work with:
  • gear hobs;
  • form milling cutters;
  • side and face cutters;
  • end mills;
  • cylindrical milling cutters;
  • countersinks;
  • reamers;
  • profile cutting tools;
  • single-edge tools;
  • special cutting tools;
  • tools with helical cutting edges;
  • profile gauges;
  • special tools according to drawings or samples.

RESTORATION OF GEAR-CUTTING TOOLS ON KLINGELNBERG AGW 231

A gear hob is one of the key tools used in gear manufacturing.
  • During operation, the cutting edges wear, which affects:
    • tooth surface quality;
    • profile accuracy;
    • gear-cutting productivity;
    • machine load;
    • dimensional stability in serial production.
  • On the Klingelnberg AGW 231, we restore the working geometry of gear hob cutting flutes.
  • up to Ø250 mm
    module up to 22
    multi-tooth tools
    straight and helical flutes

COMPLEX GEOMETRY UNDER OPTICAL CONTROL

The Petewe PFS 4US is used for components and tools where a complex form profile must be produced or restored.
  • Its optical system allows the contour to be inspected directly during machining.
  • This is particularly useful for:
    • form cutting edges;
    • profile milling cutters;
    • special cutting tools;
    • templates;
    • gauges;
    • punches;
    • small profile components.
  • Profile tools are often manufactured for a specific component or technological operation.
    Replacing such a tool can be expensive or require a long lead time for manufacturing a new one.
    In many cases, correct profile grinding makes it possible to restore the working geometry and extend the service life of the tool.

UNIVERSAL SHARPENING ON DECKEL S1 & 3E642

For tools that do not require highly specialised equipment, we use universal tool grinding machines.
  • The Deckel S1 is particularly suitable for precision work with small special tools and complex angular settings.
  • The 3E642 expands the capabilities of the department when working with larger:
    • milling cutters;
    • cutting tools;
    • countersinks;
    • reamers;
    • other universal metal-cutting tools.
  • Depending on the tooling configuration, we can machine:
    • straight cutting edges;
    • helical edges;
    • tapered surfaces;
    • form surfaces;
    • cutting tools;
    • milling cutters;
    • countersinks;
    • reamers;
    • special tools.

RESTORATION, SHARPENING, DEFECT CORRECTION & INSPECTION

  • We Preserve the Working Geometry of the Tool
    When working with complex tools, simply removing material from the cutting edge is not enough.
    It is necessary to preserve or restore:
    • profile;
    • rake angle;
    • clearance angle;
    • pitch of cutting elements;
    • relative position of teeth;
    • radii and transitions;
    • geometry of the helical flute.
  • Sharpening According to a Sample or Drawing
    When a non-standard tool must be restored, it is preferable to provide:
    • drawing;
    • original manufacturer markings;
    • module or profile data;
    • geometric parameters;
    • a new or least-worn tool as a reference sample.
  • Depending on Tool Condition, Restoration May Be Considered For:
    • normal cutting-edge wear;
    • loss of sharpness;
    • uneven wear;
    • profile deviation after repeated use;
    • the need for re-profiling;
    • correction of a form cutting surface.
  • Inspection After Sharpening
    For critical tools, we evaluate:
    • cutting-edge geometry;
    • profile;
    • angular parameters;
    • tooth uniformity;
    • runout;
    • main fitting dimensions.
    For complex profile components, additional optical and coordinate inspection methods may be used.

HOW WE WORK

  • We Receive the Tool
    We assess its:
    • type;
    • wear;
    • geometry;
    • remaining service life.
  • We Select the Process
    We choose Klingelnberg, Petewe, Deckel, 3E642 or other suitable equipment.
  • We Set Up the Machine
    We mount the tool and set the required:
    • angles;
    • profile;
    • machining parameters.
  • We Perform Sharpening or Profiling
    We restore the working surfaces with the minimum necessary material removal.
  • We Perform Finishing Operations
    If required:
    • grinding;
    • finishing;
    • other final operations.
  • Inspection
    We verify the geometry and suitability of the tool for further operation.
